Character Flaws vs Quirks

The difference between a flaw and a quirk is whether the trait produces real consequences. A flaw damages relationships or sabotages goals: manipulation erodes trust, rigidity prevents adaptation, impulsiveness leads to decisions that cannot be undone. A quirk adds texture and distinctiveness without causing that kind of damage: collecting odd facts, tapping a pen when thinking, or always arriving five minutes early. Both exist in every person, and the most revealing situations are the ones where a flaw and a strength share the same root. Perfectionism, for instance, can produce excellent work and simultaneously destroy the person's ability to collaborate or accept good enough. Charm can build genuine connection and also serve as a tool for manipulation. The flaw is not the opposite of a strength; it is often the same trait operating without restraint or self-awareness.
